Investing in Stock Market: the Shariah Way

Islamic economists and financial experts agree that if certain conditions are met, it is not only lawful but desirable to invest in the stock market. Any earnings that result from such investments will be permissible (halal). The logic behind this argument is that when one purchases shares in a company he actually becomes a shareholder and thus becomes a partner in the business. Thus, this arrangement is akin to the Islamic concept of musharakah. However, there are a host of conditions that must be satisfied before one is allowed to invest in stocks. To start with, one must be sure that the business of the corporation/company offering the stock must be halal. Over and above this, shariah scholars have developed certain financial parameters for stocks selection. These are mainly related to the business and capital structure of the company. The purpose of these criteria is to determine the level of involvement of un-Islamic activities such as riba (interest) and gharar in the overall business of the company.
One should keep in mind that these criteria are the results of modern fiqh scholarship (ijtihad) and therefore, should be seen to represent the current state of thinking on the issue. In that way, they represent the maximum tolerance levels and not the last word on the subject. In short, if a Muslim investor is contemplating investment in the stock market, he must not only be careful about the profitability but also about the compliance of shariah. These can be done by looking at the nature of business, percentage of income from riba (interest) and the financial soundness of the company. While there are a number of tools available to help understand the financial soundness of a company there are not many that can guide an investor in determining the shariah compliance of a stock. Following screening patterns may be helpful in determining the shariah compliance of stocks.
Islamic Investment Criteria
1: Qualitative Screens
There are two types of qualitative screens:
A: Industry screening:
Is the company in a business that is prohibited or abhorred in Islam? Apart from investment in banking and finance there are a number of business activities that are considered to be prohibited in Islam, and thus investing in these kinds of businesses is not something a Muslim would like to undertake such as alcoholic beverages, pork and pork products, tobacco products, gambling, lottery, pornography and adult oriented material, prostitution and drugs etc.
B: Business practices:
Following shariah principles are applicable to investing and trading practices applicable to individual investors as well as Islamic financial institutions:
Investible funds must be free of interest based debt:
The investor cannot borrow on interest to finance his investments, and therefore cannot trade on margin i.e., borrow to purchase shares. Conventional hedge funds, arbitrage funds, and leveraged buy-out (LBO) funds are prohibited for Islamic investors as they all borrow heavily in order to finance their investment practices.Prohibition of speculation
Unlike conventional investors Muslims cannot base their investment decisions on short-term speculation. They cannot enter the market as speculators but only as investors.
2: Quantitative Screens
There are three types of quantitative screens:
A: Debt/Asset Ratio:
Has the company borrowed funds on interest? Ideally there should be no interest-based debt, but based on the Islamic legal principle "li al-akthar hukm al-kul" (to the majority goes the verdict of the whole) and subsequent scholarly opinions, a company is not a permissible investment if debt financing is more than 33% of its capital. This could be calculated as Total Debt divided by Trailing 12-Month Average Market Capitalization (where Total Debt = Short-Term Debt + Current Portion of Long-Term Debt).
B: Interest-related Income:
Does the company generate any interest or interest-related income? This only includes those companies which do not make earning interest their business, but place their surplus funds in investments that yield interest income. As in the previous case, ideally no income should come from interest-related sources. However, looking at the current situation shariah scholars have permitted to invest in stocks of companies whose income from interest forms less than 5% of a company's total income. Some scholars have fixed that ceiling at 10% of a company’s total income and others at 3%.
C: Monetary Assets:
To invest in shariah compliant companies, one has to be very careful about company's monetary assets. Accounts receivables and liquid assets such as bank accounts and marketable securities have to be below the limits fixed by shariah scholars for the investment to be permissible. Some scholars have set this minimum at 51% whereas the majority of shariah scholars agree that "Accounts Receivables" should not be over 45% of company's total assets (where Accounts Receivables = Current Receivables + Long-Term Receivables).
Trading Practices
Day Trading:
Day trading has little to do with actual investing. Usually day traders watch the market and buy and sell on short-term price fluctuation (normally within one day). For this reason, a number of Islamic scholars have termed this as closer to gambling and thus it is prohibited.
Margin Trading:
Margin trading is buying stocks using money loaned from the broker. Interest is paid for this loan, and therefore it is prohibited. Moreover this is a very risky (and complicated) practice, as one can lose more than what he has borrowed.Derivatives - Options and Futures
Option is purchasing the right to buy or sell a stock or a commodity at a future date for a fixed price (regardless of the then prevailing price in the market). Exercising this option means buying at the price set in the past. Not exercising the option results in the investor paying the option fee. A great majority of scholars are of the opinion that Futures trading is not permitted in Islam.
Short Selling:
Short selling is borrowing a stock from the brokerage firm and selling it in anticipation that the stock price will further go down. Once the prices are a bit stabilised the stock is purchased back to square up the sale transaction. Thus, the investor as a “shorter” keeps the difference. This transaction involves huge risk that almost has no upper limits. Moreover, from shariah point of view you cannot sell what you do not posses.

അമ്മമാര്‍ അറിയുക, മക്കള്‍ ഔട്ട് ഓഫ്!

ഏഴാം ക്ലാസ് വിദ്യാര്‍ഥിനി സ്‌കൂള്‍വിട്ടു വരുമ്പോള്‍ ബൈക്കിലെത്തിയ പയ്യന്‍ ഒരു പൊതി കൈമാറുന്നു. ആദ്യം അമ്പരന്ന കുട്ടി അഴിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ പുത്തന്‍ മൊബൈല്‍ സെറ്റ്. തന്റെ നമ്പറും പേരും അതിലുണ്ടെന്നും മൊബൈല്‍ സൈലന്റ്‌മോഡിലാണെന്നും പറഞ്ഞ് കക്ഷി മിന്നായം പോലെ സ്ഥലം വിട്ടു. ഏഴാം ക്ലാസുകാരി ചൂണ്ടയിലകപ്പെടാന്‍ പിന്നെ സമയം വേണ്ടി വന്നില്ല. ക്ലാസില്‍ മായാലോകത്തിരുന്ന കുട്ടിയുടെ പെരുമാറ്റത്തില്‍ സംശയം തോന്നി അധ്യാപകര്‍ വിവരം അറിയിച്ചപ്പോഴാണ് രക്ഷിതാക്കള്‍ മകളുടെ മൊബൈല്‍ ബന്ധം അറിയുന്നത്. അവളെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്തപ്പോഴാണ് അജ്ഞാതനായ 'ചേട്ടന്‍' നല്‍കിയ സമ്മാനവും അവര്‍ തമ്മിലുള്ള ബന്ധവും ഞെട്ടലോടെ രക്ഷിതാക്കള്‍ മനസ്സിലാക്കിയത്. മൊബൈല്‍ കിട്ടിയിട്ട് നാലു ദിവസമേ ആയുള്ളൂ എന്ന് കുട്ടി. മകളെ വലയിലാക്കിയവരെ കണ്ടെത്താന്‍ പിതാവ് സൈബര്‍ സെല്ലിന്റെ സഹായം തേടി. ഒപ്പം മകളെ കൗണ്‍സലങ്ങിന് വിധേയയാക്കി.

മൊബൈല്‍ നല്‍കിയ 'ചേട്ടനു'മായി ബന്ധം തുടങ്ങിയിട്ട് രണ്ടു മാസമായെന്ന് കൗണ്‍സലറുടെ മുഖത്തുനോക്കി 12കാരി കൂസലില്ലാതെ പറഞ്ഞു. ആളെ കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടോ എന്ന ചോദ്യത്തിന് വ്യക്തമായി കണ്ടിട്ടില്ലെന്നായിരുന്നു മറുപടി. മകളുടെ പിറകെയുള്ളവനെ കണ്ടെത്തണമെന്ന വാശിയോടെ പിതാവ് മുന്നോട്ടുപോയപ്പോള്‍ വ്യാജ അഡ്രസിലുള്ള സിംകാര്‍ഡാണ് കാമുകന്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതെന്ന് കണ്ടെത്തി. ആളെ തന്ത്രപരമായി സ്‌റ്റേഷനിലെത്തിച്ചപ്പോഴാണ് നഗരത്തിലെ ഗുണ്ടാ ലിസ്റ്റിലുള്ള പ്രതിയാണെന്ന് ഞെട്ടലോടെ പൊലീസ് തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നത്.
കുട്ടിയെ കൊണ്ടുവന്ന് കാമുകന്റെ യഥാര്‍ഥമുഖം ബോധ്യപ്പെടുത്തിയതോടെ ആ ബന്ധം അവസാനിച്ചു. പക്ഷേ അപ്പോഴേക്കും ആ കുഞ്ഞുമനസ്സ് പിടിവിട്ടു പോയിരുന്നു.

അവര്‍ കാണാമറയത്തേക്ക്

ഏക മകളുടെ മൊബൈലിലേക്ക് വരുന്ന കോളുകള്‍ കാമുകന്റെതാണെന്ന് വൈകിയാണ് മാതാപിതാക്കള്‍ അറിഞ്ഞത്. നിരവധി മിസിങ് കേസുകള്‍ അന്വേഷിച്ച പൊലീസ് സംഘത്തിലെ അംഗമായ പിതാവ് കുട്ടിയെ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ പറഞ്ഞ് ബോധ്യപ്പെടുത്തി. ഇനി അങ്ങനെയൊന്നുമുണ്ടാവില്ലെന്ന് കുട്ടി സത്യം ചെയ്തു. മകളെ വിശ്വസിച്ച പിതാവ് മൊബൈല്‍ അവള്‍ക്ക് തിരിച്ചുനല്‍കി. അതിന് താന്‍ വലിയ വില നല്‍കേണ്ടി വരുമെന്ന് ആ പിതാവ് അറിഞ്ഞില്ല. ഏകമകളെ കാണാതായതിന്റെ വേദനയില്‍ നീറി കഴിയുന്ന, എല്ലാ സ്വപ്‌നങ്ങളും തകര്‍ന്ന മാതാപിതാക്കളുള്ള വീടാണ് അവിടമിപ്പോള്‍.

ചതിയുടെ റിങ്‌ടോണുകള്‍!

മൊബൈല്‍പ്രണയം മാതാപിതാക്കളറിയുന്നു. തരക്കേടില്ലാത്ത കുടുംബങ്ങളിലുള്ളവരായതുകൊണ്ട് കമിതാക്കളുടെ രക്ഷിതാക്കള്‍ ഒന്നിച്ചിരുന്ന് വിവാഹത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ആലോചിച്ചു. തുടക്കത്തില്‍ കുഴപ്പമില്ലാതെ നീങ്ങിയ ആലോചനയുടെ അവസാനം കാമുകന് കാര്യമായ അസുഖമുണ്ടെന്ന് തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞതോടെ പെണ്‍വീട്ടുകാര്‍ പിന്‍മാറി. ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ക്കുള്ളില്‍ മകളുടെയും കാമുകന്റെയും പ്രണയരംഗങ്ങള്‍ ഇന്റര്‍നെറ്റില്‍ പടര്‍ന്നുപിടിച്ചു.കാമുകനെതിരെ പെണ്‍വീട്ടുകാര്‍ സൈബര്‍ സെല്ലിനെ സമീപിച്ചു. അന്വേഷണ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥര്‍ ദൃശ്യങ്ങളുടെ ഉറവിടം ചികഞ്ഞു. അന്യസംസ്ഥാനത്തുള്ള ഏതോ ഒരു കേന്ദ്രത്തിലേക്കാണ് തുടക്കത്തില്‍ അന്വേഷണം എത്തിയത്. പിന്നെയും ചികഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ ദൃശ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഇന്റര്‍നെറ്റിലെത്തിച്ച കമ്പ്യൂട്ടര്‍ കണ്ടെത്തി.

അന്വേഷണ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരെയും രക്ഷിതാക്കളെയും അമ്പരപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഇരുകുടുംബങ്ങളുമായി ഒരു ബന്ധവുമില്ലാത്ത, സമൂഹത്തില്‍ ഉന്നത നിലവാരത്തില്‍ ജീവിക്കുന്ന ഒരാളുടെ വീട്ടിലുള്ളതായിരുന്നു ആ കമ്പ്യൂട്ടര്‍. തുടരന്വേഷണത്തിലാണ്, കാമുകനുമായി നേരത്തേ അടുപ്പമുണ്ടായിരുന്ന പെണ്‍കുട്ടി നിലവിലുള്ള കാമുകി പൂര്‍ണമായി വെറുത്താല്‍ അവനെ സ്വന്തമാക്കാമെന്ന കണക്കുകൂട്ടലില്‍ പിതാവിന്റെ കമ്പ്യൂട്ടര്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ദൃശ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഇന്‍ര്‍നെറ്റില്‍ എത്തിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു എന്ന സത്യം ഞെട്ടലോടെ മൂന്നു കുടുംബങ്ങള്‍ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞത്.

ജീവിതം തകര്‍ക്കുന്ന ഓഫറുകള്‍!

വിദേശത്ത് ഉന്നത ഉദ്യോഗമുള്ള അച്ഛന്റെയും നാട്ടില്‍ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന വിദ്യാലയത്തില്‍ ജോലിയുള്ള അമ്മയുടെയും പത്തില്‍ പഠിക്കുന്ന ഏക മകള്‍. പഠനത്തിലും മറ്റു കാര്യങ്ങളിലും മിടുക്കിയായിരുന്ന അവള്‍ക്ക് പാട്ടു കേള്‍ക്കാന്‍ മാത്രമായി അച്ഛന്‍ മൊബൈല്‍ഫോണ്‍ വാങ്ങി നല്‍കി.
പഠിക്കാനുണ്ടെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് ദീര്‍ഘനേരം മുറിയടച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന മകളെ അമ്മ ശാസിച്ചു. തനിച്ചിരിക്കാന്‍ സമ്മതിക്കാത്തതിന് പലപ്പോഴും അമ്മയെ അവള്‍ ചോദ്യംചെയ്തു. ഒരു ദിവസം വാതില്‍ തള്ളിത്തുറന്ന് അകത്തു കടന്ന അമ്മയെ മകള്‍ തല്ലി. അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായ മകളുടെ പെരുമാറ്റം അവരെ അമ്പരിപ്പിച്ചു. തൊട്ടടുത്ത ദിവസം സ്‌കൂള്‍ പ്രിന്‍സിപ്പലിന്റെ വിളിയെത്തി. മകള്‍ മാസങ്ങളായി മൊബൈല്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് കാമുകനുമായി സംസാരിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന സത്യം ആ അമ്മ വേദനയോടെ അറിഞ്ഞു. പാട്ടുകേള്‍ക്കാന്‍ നല്‍കിയ മൊബൈലില്‍ സിം കാര്‍ഡ് നല്‍കിയ പയ്യന്‍ അവളെ വശത്താക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. മകള്‍ മണിക്കൂറുകളോളം മുറിക്കു പുറത്തിറങ്ങാതിരുന്നതിന്റെ കാരണം അപ്പോഴാണ് പിടികിട്ടിയത്.
നാളുകളായി വീട്ടില്‍നിന്ന് കാണാതായിരുന്ന പണം കാമുകന് മകള്‍ നല്‍കുന്ന സമ്മാനമായിരുന്നു. കാമുകനുമായി ഒളിച്ചോടാനിരുന്ന മകളെ തലനാരിഴക്കാണ് അമ്മക്ക് തിരിച്ചു കിട്ടിയത്. പ്രദേശത്തെ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന മാഫിയാ സംഘത്തിലുള്ളയാളാണ് പയ്യനെന്ന് അന്വേഷണത്തില്‍ വ്യക്തമായി. ഒരു കുടുംബം തകര്‍ന്നു പോകാന്‍ ഇതു ധാരാളമായിരുന്നു.

സൈലന്റ് മോഡ്!

പ്ലസ്ടു വിദ്യാര്‍ഥിനിയായ മകളെ പെണ്ണുകാണാന്‍ ചെക്കനും കൂട്ടുകാരുമെത്തി. പെണ്ണിനെ ബോധിച്ച വരനും സംഘവും ആ വിവരം കുട്ടിയുടെ മാതാപിതാക്കളെ അറിയിച്ച് മടങ്ങി. തൊട്ടടുത്ത ദിവസം തന്നെ വരന്റെ രക്ഷിതാക്കളെത്തി. ഇരു കുടുംബങ്ങളും പരസ്‌പരം ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടതോടെ നിശ്ചയത്തിനുള്ള തീയതി ഉറപ്പിച്ച് അവര്‍ മടങ്ങി. വിവാഹനിശ്ചയത്തിന്റെ തലേന്ന് വിദ്യാര്‍ഥിനിയുടെ മൊബൈലില്‍നിന്ന് മെസേജ്
പറന്നു. പിറ്റേ ദിവസം പതിവുപോലെ സ്‌കൂളിലേക്കെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് അവള്‍ വീടു വിട്ടിറങ്ങി.

വഴിയില്‍ കാത്തു നിന്ന കാമുകനും കൂട്ടുകാരും കൊണ്ടുവന്ന കാറിലാണ് ആ യാത്ര അവസാനിച്ചത്. സ്‌കൂള്‍ വിട്ട് മകളെത്താതിരുന്നതോടെ രക്ഷിതാക്കളുടെ കണ്ണില്‍ ഇരുട്ട് കയറി. നാളെ വിവാഹ നിശ്ചയം നടക്കാനിരിക്കുന്നു. ആധികയറിയ പിതാവ് തൊട്ടടുത്ത പൊലീസ് സ്‌റ്റേഷനിലേക്ക് പാഞ്ഞു. ഈ സമയം മകളെയും കൊണ്ട് കാമുകന്റെ കാര്‍ ദേശീയ പാതയിലൂടെ പായുകയായിരുന്നു. ഹൈവേ പട്രോളിങ്ങിന്റെ പരിശോധനയില്‍ കുടുങ്ങിയ കാമുകനും സുഹൃത്തുക്കളും അറസ്റ്റിലായതുകൊണ്ട് കൂടുതല്‍ ദുരന്തമുണ്ടായില്ല. പക്ഷേ, ഒരു കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ സ്വപ്‌നങ്ങള്‍ പാടെ മാഞ്ഞു പോകാന്‍ അതു ധാരാളമായിരുന്നു. മാസങ്ങളായി പാതിരാവില്‍ മകളുടെ മൊബൈലില്‍ നിന്ന് കാമുകന് വിളി പോകുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന് മാതാപിതാക്കള്‍ അറിയുന്നത് പൊലീസുകാരില്‍ നിന്നാണ്.

ദുരന്തത്തിലേക്കുള്ള കോണ്‍ടാക്റ്റുകള്‍

പത്താം ക്ലാസില്‍ പഠിക്കുന്ന സാധാരണ വീട്ടിലെ കുട്ടിക്ക് മൊബൈല്‍ സമ്മാനിച്ചത് കാമുകനായിരുന്നു. കുട്ടിയുടെ ദിനചര്യകള്‍ മാറിയത്
പൊടുന്നനെയാണ്. കുളിക്കാന്‍ കയറിയാല്‍ ദീര്‍ഘനേരം കഴിഞ്ഞാണ് മകള്‍ പുറത്തെത്തിയിരുന്നത്. സംശയം തോന്നിയ അച്ഛന്‍ കുളിമുറിയുടെ വെന്റിലേറ്ററിലൂടെ എത്തി നോക്കിയപ്പോഴാണ് ടാപ്പു തുറന്നുവെച്ച് മൊബൈലില്‍ സംസാരിക്കുന്ന മകളെ കണ്ട് ഞെട്ടിയത്. അപ്പോഴേക്കും വൈകിപ്പോയിരുന്നു. ഒരുമിച്ച് ജീവിക്കാന്‍ അനുവദിച്ചില്ലെങ്കില്‍ ആത്മഹത്യ ചെയ്യുമെന്ന് മകള്‍ ഉറപ്പിച്ച് പറഞ്ഞു. മണെ്ണണ്ണയൊഴിച്ച് തീകൊടുക്കാന്‍ നോക്കിയെങ്കിലും തീപ്പെട്ടിക്കൊള്ളി നനഞ്ഞതുകൊണ്ട് ആദ്യ ശ്രമം പാഴായി. സ്‌കൂളിന്റെ മുകളിലെ നിലയില്‍ കയറി ചാടുമെന്ന് ഭീഷണിമുഴക്കി. മനശ്ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞന്റെ അടുക്കലെത്തിച്ചപ്പോഴാണ് മകളുടെ ബന്ധത്തിന്റെ ആഴം രക്ഷിതാക്കള്‍ അറിയുന്നത്. താളം തെറ്റിയ മനസ്സ് വീണ്ടെടുക്കാന്‍ പ്രാര്‍ഥനയുമായി ഒരു കുടുംബം മുഴുവന്‍ കാത്തിരിക്കുകയാണ്.

എല്ലാം നശിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഇത്തിരി കാര്‍ഡ്

സ്‌കൂള്‍ പരിസരത്തുവെച്ച് മെമ്മറി കാര്‍ഡുള്ള മൊബൈലുകളില്‍ അശ്ലീല വീഡിയോ ക്ലിപ്പിങ്ങുകള്‍ സെയ്‌വ് ചെയ്ത് വില്‍ക്കുന്ന റാക്കറ്റുകളുണ്ടെന്നു കൂടി രക്ഷിതാക്കള്‍ അറിയുക. ഇടക്കെപ്പോഴെങ്കിലും പരിശോധിക്കാന്‍ തയാറായാല്‍ 99 ശതമാനം മൊബൈലുകളിലും അത്തരം

The land of beauty

As the name suggests, it has
Mannu -> soil
Aaru -> River
Kaadu -> Forest,but i think tht the name

did not get in that way.there are many places with these components.they didnt have the name 'mannarkkad'!!actually its 'mannar kaadu'that is mannar means masters or rulers and kaadu means forest.this area was ruled by mannarkkad nair veedu who were called as mannar by aadivasis.And attappadi,were these aadivasis lived was (one of the rain forest in kerala) partially controlled by these mannarkkad nair tharavaadu.maybe this lead to the formation of place name'Mannarkkadu'.Manarkaaadu chaged to mannarkkadu.Or we can also say that the ruler valluvakonathiri was called mannan.That formed the place name Manarkaadu to mannarkkadu. The evergreen forest SilentValley is here in Mannarkkad.Great place to visit.

Mannarkkad (also known as Mannarghat or Manarghat) is a beautiful town in Palakkad district of Kerala state, south India. It is the headquarters of Mannarkkad Taluk, and is the biggest revenue village in Kerala. It is situated 40 km from the district headquarters, at the north east end of the district, on the way to Kozhikkode(NH213) and on the foots of Western Ghats. Silent Valley (a tropical evergreen rain forest with an unbroken evolutionary history of 50 million years) is only 66 km from Mannarkkad.

Mannarkkad has memories of the invasion of Tippu Sultan and Mopila riot. In 1921, hundreds of people lost their lives.The former Ruler/Desavazhi of Mannarkkad is known as 'Mannarkkadu Muppil Nair'. He was a 'Samantha' under 'Valluvakonathiri' of Valluvanadu. The famous novel of Malayatoor Ramakrishnan 'Ponni' is based on the 'Adivasis' of Mannarkkadu. The Sandalwood smuggler 'Veerappan' used 'Shiruvanni Forests' of Mannarkkadu Muppil Nairs as his shelter.

The population of Mannarkkad is estimated at 150,000+. Mannarkkad has an agri-based economy; main agriculture produce consists of natural rubber, coconut, areca nut, banana, plantain, nutmeg, pepper and rice. But due to inordinate use of chemicals, the natural ecosystem has been adversely affected. But over a decade of control, the town has revived many almost extinct natural species of reptile, butter flies, fresh water fish and other organisms.

70%-80% of the agri-income is earned by 20%-25% of the population. Of the rest, 10% are into trading and the remaining 65% of the total population are below slightly above or below the poverty line.

The town has for ages attracted immigrants from all over and is an amazing community of people who speak multiple languages including Kannada, Telugu, Tulu, Tamil etc. For this reason, you will find shades of a metropolitan city in terms of harmony among multiple cultures in this rather small town. Within Kerala, it had been also a destination for immigrants from southern Kerala seeking their fortune in rubber plantation sector.

Nestled between two rivers kunthippuzha and nellippuzha, Mannarkkad (Mannarghat) valley is famous for its natural beauty. Silent Valley Rain forests and the Attappadi high range add grandeur to the scenery. It is a common destination for trekkers.

Present Mannarkkad M.L.A is Mr. Jose Baby who is also the deputy speaker of Kerala Legislative assembly.Shri.T.Sivadasa Menon,Former Kerala Finance Minister also born in Mannarkkad.

Mannarkkad is famous for Mannarkkad Pooram. It is the festival celebrated Kumbha masam of every year. The Adivasis from Attappadi will reach the UdayarKunnu temple where the pooram happens to see Devi.

Man is a social being.
Knowledge seperates him from other creatures.
It gives him power to think, to understand,
to conquer and destroy.
It takes him to the helm of universe.
Modern man par excel
his great grandfather in all the arenas.
He has traveled a long way from his predecessors
-from abyss to the moon.

Today the definition of illiterate is
a man who has little knowledge
in modern scientific technologies.
Atom bombs upgraded to hydrogen bombs and so on to star wars.
Such an atmosphere is the crux
of the modern man's sophisticated knowledge.

Voyaging through civilization
renaissance, revolution and wars,
he accomplished his present status, which entitles him;
the possessor, the ruler
and the controller of the world.

Does he possess, rule and control the world...?

The world which he can't
hold can't be
possessed, ruled and controlled.
Nevertheless
he has control over his own intention;
for computers govern the world, robots control the mankind;
chips decides the destiny of Universe.
He has climbed up enough
to think himself capable and perfect.
Still.....
calamities like tsunamies,
earthquakes, diseases and re-actions of
his own advents stand to disgrace
and tells him he is incapable imperfect
and has on control over his nature,
